As we age and our priorities shift, understanding alternative transportation options can be a great way to preserve our autonomy as physical and cognitive changes may affect our ability to drive safely. In Southern California, driving may seem like our only way to navigate the region. However, In order to maintain our freedom to go where we want at any age, it is important to know what alternative transportation options are available and how to use them (CDC). The sooner we learn and explore alternative forms, the sooner we can build our confidence in remaining healthy and independent, even when driving is no longer a favorable option or possibility.
Below, you will find a variety of alternative transportation options available in Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties including rideshare mobile applications (apps), shuttles, and public transportation.

Rideshare Mobile Apps

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft require a smartphone for users to order on-demand curb-to-curb rides. Ridesharing is similar to taxi-hailing, however, drivers use their own personal cars, and there is usually a driver available to pick you up on short notice. You will need to create a user profile, and once you are set up, you will be able to order rides within minutes of your desired pick-up time. Rather than cash transactions, these services utilize electronic payment methods like credit and debit cards. Prices are provided at the beginning of your trip and may vary based on distance, when you request the ride (i.e. rush hour), demand, etc.
Rideshare Best Practices:
- Ride with an experienced friend or loved one before taking solo trips
- Double-check your starting location and destination before requesting the driver
- Notify emergency contact(s) that you are taking the trip beforehand and share your location during the ride (see resources below )
- Verify the driver’s name, car’s make, and model before getting in the car
- Before you are at your destination and as you leave the vehicle, make sure you have all your belongings

Public Transportation for Older Adults

Public transportation offers older adults an affordable and accessible way to travel while promoting independence and community engagement. Navigating the system with confidence can be easier by planning ahead, knowing available resources, and utilizing accessibility features. Each county in Keiro’s service areas (Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties) has different transit options, fare systems, and programs for older adults.
Shuttles for Older Adults

Shared shuttles for older adults offer a convenient and accessible transportation option, providing curb-to-curb shared ride van services. As a shared ride, travel time is similar to a fixed-route bus rather than a car or taxi. These region-specific and application-based programs typically serve individuals age 60 and older, as well as passengers of any age with functional disabilities. Riders must schedule their trips in advance, and drivers are not allowed to provide any form of physical assistance. Fares are generally affordable, usually costing just a few dollars per ride depending on the services used. For specific details including how to apply for the program, it’s best to visit the website of the service provider for your region, contact them for questions, and check their brochure.
