Keynote Presentation

The Top Things I Wish I Knew Before Caregiving

Presented by Shannon Ingram, Director, Marketing and Communications, UCI School of Biological Sciences

Providing care for a loved one can be an overwhelming experience filled with uncertainty. New roles and responsibilities can be difficult to take on, while also trying to ensure your loved one is getting the care they need. Each caregiving situation is unique, but caregivers are not alone. There are resources and support networks available to caregivers. This keynote session will break down key things caregivers should know to enhance their confidence while caring for a loved one.

Breakout Sessions

Breakout Session A: Caregiving in Action

Presented by Tomomi Takahashi, Staffing Manager, TheKey & Naomi Yoshida, Staffing Director, TheKey

Caregiving can be a demanding job. Sometimes caregivers need to come up with creative ideas to engage with loved ones and solve tough problems. As we present practical and hands-on tips to care for your loved one, we will also share creative ways to approach this care through demonstrations, techniques, and tools for caregiving.

Breakout Session B: How to Communicate as a Caregiver

Presented by Carol Hahn, Community Educator, OPICA Adult Day Program and Counseling Center

In addition to communicating with the care recipient, caregivers also communicate with a care team who help provide support or care for the care recipient. Effective communication with your care team is essential to discuss care needs and provide updates regarding your loved one. This session will provide conversation starters to help you coordinate care and present scenarios that include working as a team with others to provide the best care possible for a loved one.

Breakout Session C: Practicing Compassion & Patience

Presented by Heather Harada, Director of Strategy, Keiro & Michelle Hirano, Director of Development, Keiro

While every caregiving situation is different, compassion is an essential part of caring for a loved one. Showing compassion allows caregivers to be in tune to their loved one’s feelings and provide appropriate care. Through this session, attendees will discover new perspectives and ways of thinking that can positively affect their approach to providing care with essential characteristics of patience and compassion.

Shannon Ingram

Shannon Ingram

In 2003, Shannon Ingram left her job as a tech industry corporate marketing executive in Denver, CO to move “home” to Orange County, CA to become a full-time family caregiver for her mother and father. Her book, The Heart Way – A Journey from Corporate to Care, is about her humbling yet rewarding and often very humorous five years’ experience in caregiving.

When it came time to return to the business world, Shannon chose marketing and communications for senior housing companies, specifically memory care. Her mother had suffered from vascular dementia during the last few years of her life and Shannon had grown close to the memory care community. She served as vice president of marketing and communications for Silverado and for Anthem Memory Care and created an award-winning educational webinar program for the website, Caring.com.

For the past six years, Shannon has served as Director of Marketing and Communications for the School of Biological Sciences at UC Irvine, where she works for the school’s dean, one of the world’s premier Alzheimer’s researchers, Frank M. LaFerla, PhD. She is an active volunteer for UCI MIND, the university’s Institute for Memory Impairment and Neurological Disorders and Orange County’s only NIH-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

An accomplished speaker, trainer and presenter, Shannon has conducted workshops and given keynotes nationally on topics related to aging, career transition, caregiving, memory care, and communications. She currently resides in Mission Viejo with her husband, Gary. They enjoy spending time with their six grandchildren as well as at her family’s cattle ranch near Idyllwild, CA. Her favorite quote is from Rumi: “Let yourself be drawn by the stronger pull of that which you truly love.”
