June 12, 2018 – As family members, it can be difficult to watch a loved one endure an illness while having to choose between pursuing cure or comfort. Illnesses at any stage in life can be worrisome, and those concerns only grow stronger as we age. Keiro and Providence Health & Services have partnered to bring Iyashi Care to the Japanese American and Japanese community, providing personalized palliative care to older adults and their loved ones wherever they call home and as early as the day of diagnosis.
Keiro will host a free seminar on Iyashi Care at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI, 1964 W. 162nd Street, Gardena, CA 90247) on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Highlighted by Iyashi Care Team members Dr. Glen Komatsu and Dr. Yuichi Edwin Yanami, this presentation explains why Iyashi Care is so timely and important as a community service and how the program’s collaborative, team-oriented approach to medical care is innovative and optimized to meet the unique, individual needs of our loved ones.
Dr. Yanami said of Iyashi Care, “For older Japanese patients managing serious illnesses, particularly those who don’t speak English, the world outside their door can feel intimidating and present barriers to getting access to the support they need. We can provide them with the resources and support that enable them to live out their lives in their own home, surrounded by family.”
