April is Stress Awareness Month! Everyone reacts and responds to different life stressors in unique ways. Keiro asked community members about hobbies they enjoy that help them focus and reduce the stress they may be experiencing. We hope this inspires you to explore a new activity or hobby that can help you relieve stress!

With the sudden passing of my husband from a heart attack and my 102-year-old mother from internal bleeding, my life crumbled. What has been helping me is dancing hula. It brings me joy, support, and encouragement from my hula sisters as we practice together for our performances. I also shared this joy with others. I’ve done performances at Torrance Memorial Medical Center Christmas Tree Lights Charity and convalescent homes to bring joy to other seniors. I am presently practicing for a performance on Palm Sunday at the church that I attend.

The activity that helps me deal with stress in Aikido. Aikido is a Japanese martial “way” that practices dealing with conflict by blending and redirection. Our club motto is “practice with a joyful spirit”. When I use these principles in response to stress in daily life, I find myself responding more effectively in a calm, centered, and positive way. Often the result is a resolution of the stressful situation with a minimum of anxiety and or anger for everyone involved, including myself

One way that I relieve some stress is by sewing. I’ve worked on various projects such as bags, decorative towels, lanyards, wallets, and other crafts. My mother was a master at sewing, and growing up, I never took the time to learn from her. After she passed away, I learned how to sew because it reminded me of her. When I sew, it allows me to focus on the task, and I forget about all my worries. It puts me in a happy place with my mom.

For decades, I have always believed that exercise is the direct antidote for stress, especially the stresses of working. But, it has also been great for the other emotional and mental stresses of life for me. I feel that it clears my mind and body, and prepares me for what’s next. I enjoy playing tennis because it’s great exercise and it takes all of my concentration, and effort. It has also provided many great friendships over the years.

I have enjoyed ballet and jazz dance lessons for over 40 years. I am passionate about the dance forms because they involve music (including live piano accompanist), strength, flexibility, breathing, and focused concentration. An added plus are the wonderful friendships with her classmates—giving each other encouragement during lessons, rehearsals and on stage.
