On October 5, 2019, The Keiro Symposium, “Aging Into
Tomorrow: An innovative approach to the aging process” attracted over 300
community members and leaders from all over Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura
counties. The one-day gathering at The Westin Long Beach covered new concepts
about technology and aging trends that impact our community.
Keiro President & CEO Gene Kanamori welcomed attendees
and urged them to challenge their perception of what it means to age,
especially as they look to their future.
A new feature this year was the breakout tracks, covering
Aging at Home, Social Connections, and Whole-Person Care. Each track featured
an overview of the topic in the morning and in the afternoon, 12 panelists and
moderators from around the U.S. and London shared different products and
services that could assist in the aging process. Rich DeMuro, the Emmy
Award-Winning tech reporter from KTLA-TV, moderated a panel that covered not
just aging at home, but also the importance of cybersecurity and protecting
your personal information when using new devices.
The morning keynote speaker Dr. Candice Hall, Owner and CEO
of Next Advanced Medicine, spoke about cognitive decline and early-stage
Alzheimer’s disease from a functional medicine approach, which seeks the root
cause of a disease through extensive testing. The lunch keynote featured Tracey
Doi and Douglas Moore of Toyota Motor North America, who shared some of the
newest innovations addressing mobility for the future, including autonomous
cars and robots that can assist with daily tasks.
The day concluded with an innovation fair, where the
attendees could learn more from the speakers and panelists.
One participant commented, “What’s so great about this symposium is that it’s so up-to-date. I learned so many new things today, and I’d want to come back again next year.”
