SUMMARY:Bokashi with Amy Honjiyo
DESCRIPTION:Want a way to help sustain the earth? It’s Easy! \n\n\n\nCollect your food waste. Sprinkle Bokashi. And two weeks later\, bury food waste in your backyard. Then wait two more weeks and your yard is ready for planting! \n\n\n\nCome watch a simple demonstration of how to make and use Bokashi. The Bokashi method of food waste recycling originated in Okinawa by Dr. Higa. The active ingredients stop rotting and smells\, instead food is fermented and retains its nutritive value.  Plus\, Bokashi enriches your soil and promotes plant growth. \n\n\n\nAmy Honjiyo was born in East LA\, California\, transplanted in the suburbs and foothills\, and re-rooted in Monterey Park. Her day jobs consisted of “pushing pencils then tapping keyboards.” She homeschooled a kodomo\, and learned the best lessons start from the heart. She is now retired and recycled as a bokashi composting garbage collector in Little Tokyo.

SUMMARY:5 Wishes: Planning Ahead for Future Health Care Decisions with Little Tokyo Service Center
DESCRIPTION:People in any stage of life can benefit from considering their health care preferences before urgent issues arise\, but it can sometimes feel intimidating. It might seem taboo or like we’re risking bachi when we talk about end-of-life decisions\, or we might enryo and hold back because we don’t want to burden our loved ones with heavy discussions. This presentation will introduce\, 5 Wishes\, a tool to plan and maintain control of critical health care decisions\, and share our preferences with those involved in our care. It is an advance health care directive offered in bilingual formats\, including in English and Japanese\, and additional sections to facilitate communication with family members and others. Amy Phillips is the Director of Program Administration at Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC). She has over 20 years of experience providing services\, particularly to older adults and those with low-incomes\, starting with her roots as a bilingual case manager and later as the Director of Senior Services at LTSC. Over the years\, Amy has worked to raise the visibility of needs among immigrant older adults and advocate for greater access to culturally and linguistically appropriate services in Los Angeles County and beyond.

SUMMARY:Akira Komai: The Nisei who Saved the Rafu Shimpo Newspaper presented by Chris Komai
DESCRIPTION:Akira Komai\, a Nisei whose father Toyosaku was the pre-war publisher of the Rafu Shimpo Japanese-English newspaper in Los Angeles\, was thrust into the role of saving the family business when World War II began. His father was picked up by the FBI on December 7\, 1941\, and isolated from the family. When President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066\, unlawfully forcing all persons of Japanese ancestry to leave their homes and businesses and to be held in concentration camps\, Akira had to decide if he could figure a way to preserve the newspaper. \n\n\n\nChris Komai\, the nephew of Akira and the grandson of Toyosaku\, will share what he has learned about how his Uncle Aki made plans to return to Little Tokyo\, despite having few resources and options. Chris will relate the story of how his uncle’s diary\, written beginning in 1942\, fell out of the hands of his family\, but was recovered through a remarkable set of circumstances. Through excerpts of Akira Komai’s diary\, Chris will describe how his uncle’s determination led to the revival of the Rafu Shimpo in 1946. \n\n\n\nChris Komai is a freelance writer\, who has been involved in Little Tokyo for more than four decades. He was the Public Information Officer of the Japanese American National Museum for over 21 years\, where he handled public relations for the organization’s special events\, exhibitions and public programs. Prior to that\, Komai worked for the Japanese-English newspaper\, The Rafu Shimpo\, for 18 years as a sports writer\, sports editor\, and English editor. He still contributes articles to the newspaper and writes for Discover Nikkei on a variety of topics. \n\n\n\nKomai is the Past Board Chair for the Little Tokyo Community Council and is currently First Vice Chair. He also serves on the Little Tokyo Public Safety Association board. He has been a member of the Southern California Nisei Athletic Union Board of Directors for basketball and baseball for over 40 years and sits on the Board of the Nikkei Basketball Heritage Association. Komai earned a B.A. degree in English from the University of California at Riverside.
