DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tomita will share some thoughts on alternative/integrative medicine and some of the risks and benefits of what he regards as placebo effects. \n\n\n\nDr. Mitsuo Tomita was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles\, attended Dorsey High School before going to UCLA where he graduated with honors\, cum laude\, Phi Beta Kappa.  \n\n\n\nHe received his M.D. degree from UC San Francisco in 1972\, then completed his internship and residency training in Fresno before joining Kaiser Permanente in San Diego in 1975.  \n\n\n\nHe retired from Kaiser Permanente in 2008\, but then did some part-time work back in the San Joaquin Valley working in community health centers providing healthcare to low-income rural residents and farm workers.  \n\n\n\nHe is an Assistant Clinical Professor on the voluntary teaching staff of the UCSD School of Medicine and has been involved in teaching medical students and residents for many years. \n\n\n\nHe is a volunteer for Compassion and Choices\, a non-profit organization that promotes education and choice around end-of-life medical decisions.

With a variety of acts ranging from dance to magic as well as interviews with the performers\, the program is a great way for the younger generation to connect with the older generation. \n\n\n\nBrandon Takahashi is a Junior at Polytechnic School in Pasadena. He has been a member of the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus since 2012 and is a member of the Jazz band at school\, playing the Vibraphone\, keyboard and doing vocals. Through youth leadership programs such as Kizuna and Rising Stars\, he is also actively learning about the Japanese American community and ways in which he can engage and provide service.

There will also be a simple demonstration on how to regrow your green onions\, and you can bring your own green onions and follow along if you would like! All you will need is a stalk of green onions\, a knife or scissors\, cutting board\, some water\, a bowl\, and an open mind! You can also ask Brianna any questions if you would like to learn more about living sustainably. Hope to see you there!  \n\n\n\nBrianna was born and raised in LA and is now exploring Northern California for her undergrad and graduate studies in occupational therapy. During the pandemic\, she realized the importance and urgency of taking action to help our planet. She is now writing articles\, making presentations\, and utilizing social media to give tips on how to live a more sustainable life!

SUMMARY:Who Pays for Long-Term Care? With Center for Health Care Rights
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is designed to provide guidance to anyone who is interested in planning for Long-Term Care.  It explores the ABC’s of Long-Term Care:  what it is\, who is eligible\, how to get it and what it costs.  It provides a look at the Medicare Program and includes a review of California’s most common Long-Term Care providers:   Medi-Cal (Medicaid) in the public sector and Long-Term Care Insurance in the private sector.  It includes a variety of helpful community resources for family members. \n\n\n\nPresenter: \n\n\n\nSandy Risdon\, M.A. M.S.W.\, HICAP Program Manager \n\n\n\nSandy Risdon\,  Program  Manager of the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) at the non-profit Center for Health Care Rights in Los Angeles\, has more than 20 years experience providing information and advocacy on Medicare and related health insurance to Medicare beneficiaries and their families.  As a frequent lecturer at community education forums\, Sandy has educated thousands of persons on their rights and options under Medicare and related health insurance.   She also trains and supervises a corps of state-registered HICAP Volunteer Counselors who provide information\, counseling and advocacy at community placement sites throughout Los Angeles County.   She was the principal author of a Center for Health Care Rights study on implementation of advance medical directives (living wills) by local health care institutions following adoption of the federal Patient Self-Determination Act. Formerly affiliated with Jewish Family Service of Santa Monica and the Long-Term Care National Resource Center at UCLA/USC\, Sandy was a Contributing Writer to On Aging\, a newspaper column nationally syndicated by the Washington Post Writer’s Group.   Sandy holds graduate degrees in Social Work and in Higher Education.
