For nearly half a century, volunteers have been the heart and hands of Keiro Senior HealthCare, whose inception itself was sparked by the volunteerism and generosity of its founders. Today, more than 700 volunteers bring a variety of talents, skills, perspectives and resources to enhance the quality of senior life in our community.
Keiro’s ability to attract such large numbers of volunteers, who day in and day out give their time and affection, is a testament to the enduring tradition of respect and dignity within the Japanese American community.
From drivers to walking escorts, program assistants to fundraisers, Keiro’s volunteers cross cultures and span generations. Today, Nisei, Sansei, Yonsei, and Gosei volunteers bring hugs and smiles to seniors. They assist with special events, provide entertainment, and help sustain a full schedule of activities, including outings, memory training courses, ikebana, computer classes, exercise, and other activities to help residents maintain mental, physical, spiritual, and social vitality.
Besides working directly with residents, volunteers are also out in the community, helping to communicate Keiro’s mission and raise funds to support healthy aging both at Keiro and at home. Volunteers provide much-needed manpower for these events, as well as for educational seminars and Caregiver’s Conferences at community centers, churches, and temples with whom Keiro often partners.
Keiro is proud to recognize and celebrate volunteers as one of Keiro’s Living Treasures. With joyful attitudes and selfless spirits, they play a vital role in helping Keiro maintain a vibrant senior community.
