Advancing Quality of Life through Our Whole Person Approach
Providing palliative care for Japanese American and Japanese older adults with serious illnesses.
About Iyashi Care
Iyashi癒しis a Japanese word that means to heal, focusing on the whole person. The Iyashi Care program takes the whole person care approach to bring peace of mind to Japanese American and Japanese-speaking older adults who are living with advanced illnesses and debilitating symptoms.
When an older adult has a terminal illness, severe mental limitations and/or chronic pain, that older adult and their loved ones face many difficult decisions. Common questions they may ask are, “What is best for our loved one? Should we continue medical treatment or try to cure the illness or should we focus on comfort level? Is it possible to pursue both?”
Iyashi Care gives you and your loved ones access to a team to help you make that decision. Led by Dr. Glen Komatsu and Dr. Yuichi Edwin Yanami, the palliative care team will include a nurse, social worker, administrator, and administrative assistant.
As the first of its kind in the United States, Iyashi Care will serve hundreds of older Japanese American and Japanese older adults and provide culturally sensitive palliative care based on the individual’s preferences, needs, and values.
