The Institute for Healthy Aging at Keiro and Orange County Buddhist Church presented “High Tech and High Touch to Age in Place at Home,” a free conference and resource fair for caregivers and future caregivers at the Orange County Buddhist Church in Anaheim, California on May 21. This event was sponsored by Keiro Senior HealthCare with partial funding from the Aratani Foundation, Takayama Foundation, and California Community Foundation.

The conference included a resource fair, presentations on important caregiving topics such as technology innovations and family decision making and communication, and an excerpt from Velina Hasu Houston’s play, Calligraphy, with original actors Emily Kuroda and Melody Butiu portraying a mother and daughter dealing with the issues of filial piety and caregiving stress.

Complimentary attorney and pharmacist consultations were available by appointment. Safe lifting and fitness demonstrations,  stroke screening provided by the  SCAN Van, a social media lab featuring hands-on training for programs like Facebook and Twitter, free respite care by Acacia Adult Day Services, and lunch were also offered at no charge to participants.

“The conference was extremely good,” said attendee Dennis Sasaki. “I appreciated the opportunity to learn about different technology and caregiving options. The SCAN van was also very informative.”
